My Story

Before marriage and children, my husband and I were united by a love for language and exploring other cultures. We agreed early on that we would afford our children opportunities in learning and discovery that we had to seek out on our own as young adults.  Bilingual SuperNoVAs was born out of my longtime love of language and my newly born love for my growing family.

I always fancied myself a bit of a linguaphile. Coursework in creative writing, language acquisition, and linguistic field methods pepper my undergraduate transcript. I took the requisite Spanish courses offered in middle school and high school and even dated my fair share of Latin American boys as a teenager allowing an intermittent immersion opportunity (of sorts) in their homes.

My attempt to minor in Spanish unfortunately began to threaten my fabulous 3.7 GPA, so my formal instruction in Spanish concluded in undergrad roughly 5 courses in. Instead I switched gears, minored in English, and delved deep into an interdisciplinary major, Cognitive Science, with a concentration in Linguistics.

Language and culture have also been prominent topics in my collegiate research. My undergraduate thesis on Black Vernacular English was completed as part of my Psychology and Cognitive Science degree programs at the University of Virginia.  My graduate degree program in Hearing and Speech Sciences at the University of Maryland concluded with the defense of my modified masters thesis on including multicultural competence training in graduate speech therapy programs.

Today I split my time between part-time employment as a speech language pathologist at Reston Hospital Center in Reston VA, and a full time commitment to being a great wife, mother, and newly anointed blogger.
